“Family Matters”: A Qualitative Exploration of Family Recovery in the Context of Problem Gambling

ABSTRACT Objective To explore how family members experience recovery in the context of problem gambling and identify the types of support they find most helpful. Background Problem gambling is a global public health concern with profound and enduring effects on families. Although recovery‐oriented approaches are central in mental health and addiction services, family recovery in gambling contexts remains poorly understood. Method Using an explorative, interpretive design, we conducted semi‐structured interviews with 11 participants. Data were analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis. Results Family recovery is a complex process embedded in everyday life. Three themes explore this: (1) Gaining foothold —building knowledge to make sense of the situation, (2) A balancing act —negotiating control, trust, and roles, and (3) Hope and horizons —working through the past while envisioning possible futures. Recovery involved rebuilding trust and managing financial and relational challenges. Helpful support included access to information, peer support, involvement in treatment, and strengthening individual coping and family relationships. Conclusion Family recovery is a dynamic, relational process rooted in everyday life contexts, extending beyond symptom reduction or individual treatment. Implications for Practice Services should incorporate family perspectives and address relational and practical dimensions. Developing family‐focused interventions, recognizing recovery as an ongoing process, is essential.
