Principals' Leadership Qualities as Predictors of Quality Education in Public Senior Secondary Schools in Lesotho

Abstract This study examined the influence of principals' leadership qualities on the quality of education in selected public senior secondary schools in Lesotho. Specifically, it investigated whether principals' leadership qualities significantly predict quality education by testing the null hypothesis that no significant relationship exists between the two variables. A quantitative correlational research design was employed, involving 480 teachers from 30 public senior secondary schools across five districts in Lesotho. Data were analysed using SPSS version 27. Descriptive statistics summarized the data, while Pearson Product-Moment Correlation and simple linear regression examined the relationship and predictive influence of principals' leadership qualities on quality education. The findings indicated that teachers perceived principals' leadership qualities to be relatively high (M = 3.699, SD = 0.930), while quality education was also rated positively (M = 3.278, SD = 0.582). Pearson correlation analysis revealed a strong positive and statistically significant relationship between principals' leadership qualities and quality education (r = .713, p < .001). Simple linear regression further showed that leadership qualities significantly predicted quality education (β = .713, t = 22.264, p < .001), explaining 50.9% of the variance (R² = .509). The regression model was statistically significant, F(1, 478) = 495.674, p < .001, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. The study concludes that principals' leadership qualities are strong predictors of quality education in Lesotho's public senior secondary schools. Strengthening competencies in visionary leadership, instructional leadership, communication, integrity, collaboration, and teacher motivation can substantially improve educational quality. The study recommends prioritizing leadership development, mentoring, and continuous professional development to enhance principals' leadership capacity and educational outcomes.
