Fixation of scapular neck fractures in two foals using 4.5/5.0‐mm locking compression plates

Summary This report describes the successful surgical management of two Thoroughbred foals (aged 1 and 2 months; weighing 80 kg and 113 kg, respectively) with complete scapular neck fractures. Both foals were treated with internal fixation using 4.5/5.0‐mm locking compression plates (LCPs). Dual LCP constructs were applied cranial and caudal to the scapular spine, incorporating both locking screws and cancellous screws to enhance stability in young foals. In both cases, surgical intervention enabled immediate postoperative weight‐bearing and progressive return to soundness. Both foals were sound at a walk by Days 15–30 and sound at the trot by 3 months postoperatively. Implant removal was performed 3 months after surgery based on radiographic evidence of complete fracture healing and to allow unimpeded preparation for racing. One foal subsequently began flat racing at 3 years of age and had competed in four races with one win at the time of manuscript submission. These cases demonstrate that scapular neck fractures in Thoroughbred foals can be successfully managed with locking compression plate fixation. The favourable outcomes, including documented return‐to‐racing performance, support the consideration of surgical repair using 4.5/5.0‐mm LCPs in young Thoroughbred foals intended for athletic careers.
