Spillover and crossover effects of work–family enrichment: impacts on life satisfaction, turnover intentions and innovation in Indian dual-earner couples

Purpose This study examines the spillover-crossover effects of work-family enrichment on key outcomes, including life satisfaction, intention to quit and innovative workplace behavior among dual-working couples in an Indian context. Design/methodology/approach The study utilized dyadic data from a sample of 213 Indian dual-working couples working in different organizations. The data was collected through a survey questionnaire. Stas et al. (2018) APIM_SEM APP was used to analyze the dyadic data to understand the actor-partner interdependence model. Findings The results indicate that work-family enrichment (WFE) has a positive and direct spillover (actor) effect on life satisfaction and innovative workplace behavior, while exerting a negative spillover effect on intention to quit for both husbands and wives. Additionally, the findings reveal that the crossover (partner) effect of work-family enrichment on innovative workplace behavior is significant from wives to husbands but not vice versa. The crossover effect of work-family enrichment on turnover intention and life satisfaction is significant from husbands to wives, not vice versa. Research limitations/implications The study adopted a cross-sectional research design. Data were collected only from dual-working heterogeneous couples working full-time in various sectors in the Indian context. Originality/value This study makes a significant contribution to the work-life literature and is among the few that examine the crossover effects of work-family enrichment on important outcomes such as innovative workplace behavior and turnover intention. It also addresses key research gaps in the work-life domain within the Indian context.
