Achieving methodological rigor in mixed-methods research: A critical narrative synthesis of common pitfalls and mitigation strategies

Mixed-methods research (MMR) represents a sophisticated methodological approach that integrates quantitative and qualitative paradigms to generate comprehensive insights into complex phenomena across health, education, and social sciences. This narrative synthesis employs rigorous methodological standards to critically analyze common pitfalls in MMR implementation, drawing exclusively from foundational methodological texts, empirical audits, and authoritative practical guidelines. Through systematic thematic analysis of 22 key sources, we identify interconnected methodological vulnerabilities spanning philosophical justification, design alignment, sampling coherence, integration execution, and transparent reporting. Our analysis reveals that inadequate justification and philosophical misalignment consistently precipitate design mismatches, which in turn undermine integration quality and compromise study validity. Evidence-based mitigation strategies emphasize early philosophical articulation, design-process congruence, structured integration techniques including joint displays, collaborative methodological expertise, and transparent reporting frameworks. This synthesis provides a rigorous, actionable framework for researchers seeking to enhance MMR quality by anticipating and addressing these systemic vulnerabilities before they compromise research validity and impact. The findings establish that methodological rigor in MMR is not merely procedural but requires sustained attention to epistemological coherence and integrative intentionality throughout the research lifecycle.
