The Social and Cultural Functions of Sports in the Community of Lithuanian DPs (1945–1949)
Following the Soviet occupation in 1944, tens of thousands of Lithuanians fled their homeland. Over 60,000 remained in Western Europe, many finding temporary refuge in Displaced Persons (DP) camps in postwar Germany. Within these camps, they created a vibrant social life, with sport emerging as a significant social and cultural practice that fostered community. Sport served social and cultural functions within the Lithuanian DP community from 1945 to 1949. Athletic organizations were integral to Lithuanian social life, providing more than just entertainment. They served to physically and spiritually educate youth, prepare them for the future and offer an arena to acquire skills essential for civic participation. Through practices of discipline, these organizations promoted respectful behaviour, which was key to cultivating a positive image of Lithuanians abroad. Furthermore, by providing a platform for international cooperation, sport helped the community overcome its isolation and served as a significant tool for national representation.
