Reinforcement Technologies in Flexible Composite Pipes: Engineering principles, reinforcement architectures and application-based selection

Flexible composite pipes (FCPs) are increasingly used across energy and industrial applications, where their corrosion resistance, low weight, spoolability and installation efficiency offer significant advantages over conventional metallic pipeline systems. Central to their structural performance is the reinforcement system, which provides much of the capacity required to resist pressure-induced and other mechanical loads. This paper provides an engineering overview of the principal reinforcement technologies used in FCPs, including glass, carbon, aramid and polyester fibres, as well as steel cord and steel strip reinforcement. It examines how reinforcement material, architecture, bonding, load-transfer mechanisms and interaction with other pipe layers influence structural behaviour and long-term performance. Key considerations including pressure, temperature, fatigue, permeation, external-pressure and collapse requirements, pipe diameter, installation and manufacturing quality are discussed in the context of application-based selection. The paper emphasises that reinforcement performance cannot be assessed in isolation and that selection should ultimately consider the complete, qualified pipe construction and its suitability for the intended service conditions.
