Finding My Psychoanalytic Way

After 62 years of psychotherapy, at age 83, I have finally begun to understand the root cause of my psychological difficulties and why it took so long to discover. Through 20 years of Gestalt Psychotherapy, 20 years of Psychoanalysis, and 5 years of Relational Analysis, no one knew, especially me, that I had been traumatized in very early childhood. It was not until 8 years ago, when I began psychoanalysis with Dr H, when I learned of the trauma and was correctly diagnosed, that I was able to make sense of my symptoms and truly change. As a Psychologist, I am astounded that it took so long. This paper is my attempt to make sense of how the earlier therapies didn’t succeed, whereas my latest, with Dr H, was successful.
