Kalal–Kalachuri–Haihaya Historical Study: Epigraphic, Linguistic, Genealogical and Historical Evidence

This research study examines the historical relationship between the Kalal/Kalwar/Kalar community and the Kalachuri-Haihaya tradition through a multidisciplinary analysis of epigraphic, linguistic, genealogical, historical, archaeological, ethnographic, census, and documentary evidence. The study investigates the Haihaya identity of the medieval Kalachuri dynasties through primary inscriptions and copper-plate records, alongside the historical forms Śauṇḍikeya, Śauṇḍikera, Tuṇḍikera, Śauṇḍika, Kalyapāla, Kalvapāla, Kallapāla and Kallāla associated with the historical development of Kalal/Kalwar terminology. Particular attention is given to early-medieval Kallapāla evidence, the Kalachuri-Haihaya inscriptional tradition, the historical Sorar/Kalal Raja tradition of Chhattisgarh, Central Provinces evidence concerning Jain Kalwars, early twentieth-century Kalwar historical publications, and the historical testimony of Vishveshvar Nath Reu and other scholars. The research evaluates these sources chronologically and comparatively, distinguishing primary inscriptional evidence from later historical interpretation, community traditions, linguistic evidence, and modern institutional records. It also examines the historical Kshatriya and Haihaya identity traditions associated with Kalal/Kalwar/Kalar communities. The study argues that the cumulative evidence establishes a significant historical continuity between the Kalal/Kalwar tradition and the broader Kalachuri-Haihaya historical framework, particularly in the Central Indian and Chhattisgarh context. The paper presents this conclusion through a documented evidence chain rather than relying on name similarity or isolated community tradition.
