Rewiring the Battlefield: The Impact of Drones, Cyber Warfare, and AI on Modern Military Theory

This capstone examines how technological innovation—particularly drones, cyber warfare, and artificial intelligence (AI)—has transformed the theory and practice of modern warfare. Building on the historiography of military revolutions from the gunpowder era to the digital age, the study argues that technology alone does not constitute a true revolution in military affairs; transformation occurs only when technology is fused with doctrine, organization, and culture. Each chapter traces a dimension of this evolution: the historical lineage of military revolutions, the rise of unmanned systems, the emergence of cyber conflict, the integration of AI into command and targeting, and the convergence of these technologies within multi-domain operations (MDO). Through a synthesis of classical theory, contemporary scholarship, and case studies—including Ukraine, the South China Sea, and the Tallinn Manual—the project demonstrates that the fusion of digital acceleration and organizational adaptation defines the twenty-first century’s “intelligent battlespace.” The analysis further explores the ethical and legal dilemmas these technologies create under international humanitarian law, as well as their implications for deterrence, accountability, and human judgment in war. Ultimately, the study concludes that modern conflict remains rooted in Clausewitzian principles of politics and friction, even as AI-driven systems compress decision cycles and challenge traditional notions of control. The future of warfare will depend less on machines themselves than on the human systems—strategic, institutional, and ethical—that govern their use.
