Thermal shock resistance of a plate based on nonlocal differential elastic theory
This article investigates the nonlocal differential elastic theory to the thermal shock fracture and thermal shock resistance of a plate with a surface crack. The dynamic temperature field is evaluated by the standard separation of variables method. Nonlocal thermal stresses in the absence of a crack are derived by the semi-analytical method. Through an integral expression, the thermal stress intensity factor for the crack problem is determined. Effects of the thermal shock time and crack length on the thermal stress intensity factor are graphically presented and discussed. The envelope of the thermal stress intensity factor appears when the thermal shock time reaches a critical value t/t0=0.03. The thermal shock resistance is evaluated by the stess-based failure criterion and toughness-based failure criterion. The nonlocal model predicts a lower thermal shock resistance compared with the local model.
