Production and proliferation of a Philippine diaspora: resettlement as a promise of leisure in exchange for labour
Challenges experienced by arrivants are well documented in leisure and transdisciplinary mobilities scholarship. However, little is known of a diaspora in relation to the promises of ease of living or other imagined leisure forms that migration catalyses. This paper unpacks how migration for labour production complicates ‘leisure’ when people become labouring bodies through the very translocationFootnote1 that permits the illusion of freedom. Using transdisciplinary literatures alongside critical intersectional theories, we offer a conceptual framework for articulating how some arrivant and diasporic communities navigate resettlement in an effort to realise the promise of leisure in exchange for labour.
