Like God in What Terms: Pride as the Will to Occupy the Grounding Position
This essay reads Genesis 3:5 through the distinction between divine grounding and creaturely reception developed in the Gaitan Topology. The serpent’s promise to be “as gods, knowing good and evil” is interpreted not as vague elevation but as an offer to occupy the grounding relation itself. Because no creature can occupy that relation, the promise becomes counterfeit ontology. The essay then asks the question the temptation suppresses: like God in what terms? Drawing together The Serpent, the Self, Eve’s Algorithm, and The Archive and the Now, it argues that flat sight makes this question unaskable and defines pride structurally as the will to occupy the grounding position while remaining, ontologically, a receiver. Pride thus becomes the category error underlying subsequent sin and a disposition capable of propagating without repeated individual seduction.
