Factors associated with risky pedestrian rolling gap crossing behavior at urban intersections in Khulna Metropolitan City, Bangladesh
Pedestrian safety remains a key concern in developing countries’ rapidly urbanizing areas, such as Khulna metropolitan city, Bangladesh, due to increased traffic volume, inadequate infrastructure, and unpredictable behavior. Most pedestrian crashes occur in urban areas. Pedestrians are more likely to be involved in traffic crashes while crossing the road. Pedestrians use a particularly risky strategy called rolling gap crossing. This study focuses on the main variables that influence the use of rolling gap crossings at intersections. Data on pedestrian rolling gap crossing, pedestrian, geometric, and environmental factors were collected using a videography survey method, as well as on-site observations and measurements. A binary logistic regression model was developed from the collected data. The constructed model found that three statistically significant variables influenced pedestrian rolling gap crossing. These variables were pedestrian crossing speed, available gap, and age. The study's findings will assist authorities in taking the required steps to address pedestrian safety concerns.
