DNA Groove Ratios: Golden Ratio Claim Unsupported by Crystallographic Data — E8 Intelligence Research
FINDING: DNA major and minor groove widths approximate the golden ratio (1.618) in their proportional relationship. | MATH: Major groove width ≈ 22 Å, minor groove width ≈ 12 Å; ratio 22/12 ≈ 1.833 (not 1.618). However, refined measurements from B-DNA crystallography give major groove width ~11.7 Å, minor groove ~5.7 Å; ratio 11.7/5.7 ≈ 2.053. The golden ratio appears in the ratio of the sum of widths to the major groove: (11.7+5.7)/11.7 ≈ 1.487, or to the minor: (11.7+5.7)/5.7 ≈ 3.053. No exact 1.618 emerges from standard groove widths. | CONNECTION: The golden ratio (φ = 1.618) is not directly supported by these measurements. However, the ratio of the helical rise per base pair (3.4 Å) to the diameter (20 Å) gives 20/3.4 ≈ 5.882, unrelated. The 0.618 reciprocal appears if one considers minor/major = 5.7/11.7 ≈ 0.487. No clean φ link. | DEPTH: 2 — The claim is popular but unsupported by precise data. The groove widths do not yield φ or its reciprocal. The evidence shows approximate ra Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Part of the E8 Intelligence Research series. Platform: e8intelligence.com
