Matrix bordering structure of the Faddeev–Jackiw algorithm: kernel reduction and symbolic automation

Abstract We show that the iterative Faddeev–Jackiw (FJ) reduction for singular Lagrangian systems constitutes a geometrically constrained instance of the Matrix Bordering Technique (MBT). For a first-order Lagrangian with singular pre-symplectic form, each iteration of the Barcelos–Neto–Wotzasek algorithm produces an extended symplectic matrix of canonical bordered form, $$f^{{(m)}} = \left( {\begin{array}{*{20}c} {f^{{(0)}} } & B \\ { - B^{{ \top }} } & 0 \\ \end{array} } \right){\text{ }}$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>f</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:mi>m</mml:mi> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mfenced> <mml:mrow> <mml:mtable> <mml:mtr> <mml:mtd> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>f</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0</mml:mn> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> </mml:mtd> <mml:mtd> <mml:mi>B</mml:mi> </mml:mtd> </mml:mtr> <mml:mtr> <mml:mtd> <mml:mrow> <mml:mrow/> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>B</mml:mi> <mml:mi>⊤</mml:mi> </mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:mrow> </mml:mtd> <mml:mtd> <mml:mn>0</mml:mn> </mml:mtd> </mml:mtr> </mml:mtable> </mml:mrow> </mml:mfenced> <mml:mspace/> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> where the bordering block B is determined by the gradients of the consistency constraints.
