Homoeopathic Therapeutics of Allergic Rhinitis in Children: A Literature Review and Comparative Materia Medica of Commonly Indicated Medicines

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is one of the most common chronic allergic disorders affecting children and is associated with impaired sleep, school performance, quality of life, and an increased risk of comorbid allergic disease, particularly asthma. Pediatric allergic rhinitis requires accurate diagnosis, assessment of disease severity, identification of relevant allergens, and age-appropriate management. Conventional evidence-based approaches include allergen avoidance where appropriate, intranasal corticosteroids, antihistamines, saline irrigation, and allergen immunotherapy in selected patients. Contemporary international guidance emphasizes individualized assessment and stepwise management. Homoeopathy is used in several countries as a complementary therapeutic approach for allergic and respiratory complaints. The homoeopathic model emphasizes individualization based on the totality of symptoms, including characteristic nasal discharge, sneezing patterns, modalities, associated ocular manifestations, thermal state, thirst, food preferences, and constitutional characteristics. This narrative review examines the literature concerning allergic rhinitis in children and provides a comparative materia medica of commonly described homoeopathic medicines, including Allium cepa, Sabadilla officinarum, Arsenicum album, Natrum muriaticum, Euphrasia officinalis, Pulsatilla nigricans, Nux vomica, and Kali bichromicum. Available clinical evidence concerning homoeopathy for allergic rhinitis includes randomized trials in predominantly adult populations and broader pediatric respiratory literature. However, direct high-quality evidence specifically evaluating individualized homoeopathy for pediatric allergic rhinitis remains insufficient. Consequently, materia-medica differentiation should be regarded as a hypothesis-generating clinical framework rather than evidence of comparative effectiveness. Future research should employ validated symptom scores, quality-of-life instruments, objective nasal outcomes, appropriate controls, transparent prescribing algorithms, adverse-event reporting, and pediatric-specific study designs.
