English textbooks used in Taiwanese senior high schools: from the perspective of glocalization regarding content and pedagogy

The purpose of this study is to investigate English textbooks used in senior high schools (Grades 10 to 12) in Taiwan. The investigation focuses on both content (e.g. subject matter, texts, and activities) and pedagogy (i.e. how teachers utilize the textbooks in practice). Using the lens of English glocalization within the national English curriculum, the study examines how these textbooks reflect a glocal perspective in English education. Furthermore, it explores how teachers adapt their pedagogical strategies to utilize the textbooks effectively. Based on the findings, the study proposes suggestions for developing English textbooks and teaching practices at the senior high school level, emphasizing glocalization teaching. These suggestions include: promoting the use of English beyond the classroom to enhance students’ intercultural communicative competence; providing a more comprehensive understanding of English variation (e.g. global Englishes); adapting pedagogical strategies to maximize textbook utility; and cultivating students’ awareness of English glocalization. This study contributes to the growing discourse on integrating global and local perspectives in English language education, offering practical and theoretical insights for curriculum developers and educators.
