When managing is leading: how everyday management enables learning and adaptation

Purpose This study aims to examine how everyday managerial practices function as acts of leadership in contemporary organizations facing adaptive challenges. Design/methodology/approach Rather than treating leadership as episodic or positional, the study draws on a synthesis of empirical and conceptual literature to argue that leadership is enacted daily through managerial behaviors that foster learning, psychological safety, strengths-based alignment, coaching and developmental career architectures. Findings The findings advance the central claim that managing and leading are not separable activities in adaptive contexts, but integrated practices essential to organizational learning and sustained performance. Practical implications The study offers practical guidance to scholars and reflective practitioners interested in leadership development and the everyday enactment of leadership in complex environments. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, this study is one of the first papers that contributes to ongoing conversations about adaptive leadership, workplace learning and managerial capability by reframing management as a primary vehicle for enabling learning and adaptation.
