The 1982 Nehru Gold Cup: spectatorship, internationalism and football governance in India
In the year 1982, India’s first ever international football tournament, named Nehru Gold Cup was hosted in Calcutta. This tournament was significant in many ways as it brought India back on the international football map, and proved India’s ability as a host nation of an international football tournament. The tournament also exposed India’s football standard as compared to the international level. It is therefore important to study the historical significance of the maiden edition of the Nehru Gold Cup to grasp its impact on Indian sporting society – culturally, economically and politically. In the present article, I intend to explore the motives behind the organization of the Nehru Gold Cup; spectatorship; debates around refereeing; event hospitality and its impact on the future of Indian football. This study is based on primary sources including newspapers, magazines and interviews along with relevant secondary works. The study is expected to accord due importance to the Nehru Gold Cup in the history of football in India.
