Reproducing and Predicting the Shear Band Characteristics of Geomaterials Using a Novel Multiscale Coupling Finite-Element Method

Abstract Soil is a multiphase and multiscale geomaterial. The failure of soil is a multiscale and hierarchical deformation process, and the onset and development of the shear band of soil is the pivotal factor for evaluating the strength and stability of soil. A multiscale coupling finite-element program based on the soil cell element model was developed to investigate the effects of solid is written to study the effect of the particle kinematics of solid particles on the onset and development of the shear band of soil. The results indicate that the multiscale FEM can relate the microscopic particle characteristics to the macroscopic mechanical response and resolve the pathological mesh dependence problem of the traditional FEM; the rotational displacement of soil particles concentrates within the shear band; the shear band width and normalized shear band width increase with increasing reinforcement particle diameter and have a linear dependence on the diameter of those particles. The evolution of plastic deformation that is induced and transmitted by the rotation of reinforcement particles is the microscopic physical mechanism of the trans-scale evolution of the shear band of soil.
