Predetermined Paths: Mapping the Matthew Effect, the Suppression Paradox, and the Silly Boffin Equation

This work presents a full structural mapping of the Matthew Effect as a visibility-driven architectural phenomenon that determines scientific destiny. Through a multi-layer deduction framework, it shows how visibility gradients, reinforcement loops, gatekeeping nodes, and prestige inertia create a system where merit is independent of recognition and independent work is systematically suppressed. The paper introduces the Suppression Paradox, demonstrating how systems searching for answers can suppress the people who produce them, and the institutional Dunning–Kruger inversion, where visibility is mistaken for competence and prestige for epistemic authority. At the centre of the work is the Silly Boffin Equation — a formal mathematical model showing how visibility stacks compound over time while competence remains orthogonal, producing predictable suppression zones where structurally strong contributions remain unseen. The equation exposes the evaluative failure built into modern scientific and bureaucratic systems. The integrated model reveals that once visibility architecture exists, suppression becomes mathematically inevitable. The paper concludes with structural remedies designed to correct the architecture itself, including visibility equalisation, independent work registries, anti-inertia credit systems, and transparency protocols. This work began with a local intake-system failure at Oldham Council, whose internal platform absorbed the author’s analysis as if he were staff — yet produced no reaction. This real-world duality exemplifies the very phenomenon mapped in the paper: systems that acknowledge structural truth but refuse structural change. Visibility is not merit; visibility is architecture. And architecture becomes correctable once it is mapped. Abstract
