Apply, Analyze, Evaluate: The Power of Practice in Promoting Exam Readiness
Introductory STEM courses often face a disconnect between student preparation and exam performance. This article describes the development and implementation of the Apply, Analyze, Evaluate (AAE) exercise, a formative assessment strategy aligned with Bloom’s Taxonomy integrated into an introductory biology course. The AAE serves as a concept reinforcement and metacognitive tool, improving exam preparedness and bridging gaps between passive studying and higher-order thinking. Quantitative and qualitative outcomes suggest enhanced student performance, engagement, and perception of learning. This model provides a scalable, evidence-informed strategy for other educators seeking to promote deeper learning and exam readiness.
