What is Fair? Incarcerated Women's Views on Their Rightful Treatment in Finnish Prisons
Among incarcerated women, the high prevalence of trauma and diverse service needs underscores the importance of constructive interactions. Treatment by those in authority during imprisonment can significantly influence women's well-being and rehabilitation. This study analyzes 16 qualitative interviews with incarcerated women who rate fair treatment in their interactions with prison staff—nongovernmental organization actors, correctional healthcare personnel, and social services staff. Four treatment elements emerged: respect, neutrality, transparency, and voice, with different authorities’ experiences varying markedly. The women's accounts reflected how fair treatment can either support emotional safety or contribute to retraumatization. Trauma-informed, procedurally fair practices may enhance rehabilitation and promote safer prisons.
