The Role of 5G Networks in Enabling IoT-Based Smart Cities: Opportunities and Challenges

The emergence of 5G technology along with IoT is revolutionizing the way services and infrastructure of cities are managed. 5G offers improved network capabilities and thus enables fast communication and data exchange with lower latency and connectivity of a large number of devices. In this regard, this research paper aims at discussing the role of 5G networks in enabling IoT-based smart cities through analysis of opportunities and challenges associated with this process. This study will address issues related to improvement of transportation, healthcare, energy management, environmental monitoring, and public safety through real-time data collection and communication. At the same time, the study will cover the most pressing challenges that have to be addressed, such as cybersecurity threats, privacy issues, cost, infrastructure needs, and device compatibility. As the results show, 5G can offer numerous opportunities for making cities efficient, sustainable, and connected, but these challenges must be overcome for achieving success.
