Lived Experiences of Gig Workers in Marawi City: Exploring Work Motivation, Job Satisfaction, and Career Aspirations
Abstract. The rapid growth of the gig economy has transformed employment patterns worldwide, providing flexible work opportunities, particularly in areas with limited access to formal employment. This study explored the lived experiences of gig workers in Marawi City, Philippines, focusing on their work motivation, job satisfaction, and career aspirations. Guided by Self-Determination Theory and Social Exchange Theory, the study employed a qualitative phenomenological design to understand how gig workers perceive and navigate their work experiences within a post-conflict socio-economic context. Fifteen gig workers engaged in various occupations, including online selling, tutoring, catering, photography, vlogging, make-up artistry, and buy-and-sell enterprises, were purposively selected and interviewed using semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Findings revealed that gig workers are primarily motivated by financial necessity, flexibility, autonomy, and opportunities for personal growth. Participants generally reported positive job satisfaction due to the independence and income-generating opportunities associated with gig work. However, challenges such as income instability, lack of employment benefits, inadequate infrastructure, and work-related stress tempered these positive experiences. Career aspirations varied, with some participants viewing gig work as a long-term entrepreneurial pathway while others regarded it as a temporary means of achieving more stable professional careers. The findings further indicate that the socio-economic realities of Marawi City significantly shape workers' motivations, experiences, and future aspirations. The study concludes that gig work serves as an important livelihood strategy in Marawi City, highlighting the need for policies and support mechanisms that promote worker protection, skills development, and sustainable career opportunities Keywords: Career Aspiration; Gig Economy; Gig Workers; Work Motivation; Job Satisfaction
