Factors associated with motivation to quit among hospitalized patients who smoke

Background This study aimed to assess the factors associated with motivation to quit smoking among hospitalized patients enrolled in the Financial Incentives for Smoking Treatment II (FIESTA II) trial. Methods This cross-sectional study analyzed baseline data from the FIESTA II trial. Participants were classified into the contemplation, preparation, and action stages of motivation to quit smoking. We examined the association between motivation to quit smoking and different groups of variables: sociodemographic characteristics, financial characteristics, and substance use and smoking habits. Results A total of 1,078 participants (mean [SD] age, 50.6 [12.2] years; 740 [69%] Male; 455 [43%] White) were included in this study. In the regression model, Black or African American race (OR = 1.76; 95% CI, 1.26–2.45) and those with a race not listed on the questionnaire (OR = 1.79; 95% CI, 1.27–2.50) had higher motivation to quit stages compared to White individuals. On the other hand, number of days smoked in the past 30 days (OR = 0.97; 95% CI, 0.95–0.98), and having no perceived support to quit smoking (OR = 0.58; 95% CI, 0.40–0.84) were associated with less motivation to quit smoking. Similarly, those who had never married had less motivation to quit smoking (OR = 0.62, 95% CI, 0.44–0.87) compared to those who were married or were living with a partner. Conclusion This study found that race, perceived external support, marital status, and the number of days smoked in the past month were all significantly associated with either increased or decreased motivation to quit smoking in this population.
