THE effectiveness of nurturing function of college students’ volunteer service under the influence of external social environment

In the evolving landscape of higher education, volunteer service has emerged as a critical vehicle for cultivating students’ civic values, practical competence, and ideological consciousness. However, current practices often suffer from formalization, poor training, and a mismatch between service content and community needs. This study investigates the internal motivational mechanisms and external contextual factors influencing college students’ participation in volunteer service, with data drawn from applied universities in urban China. We propose a comprehensive framework that integrates internalization pathways, precise task matching (the alignment of volunteer tasks with specific community needs to maximize impact) and multi-source feedback loops, grounded in planned behavior theory and moral identity construction. A combination of survey analysis, correlation modeling, and course network evaluation was employed to examine the role of education level, gender, knowledge acquisition, environmental awareness, and social support in shaping volunteering outcomes. The results reveal significant heterogeneity in participation behavior and educational gains across demographic groups, suggesting the need for more personalized and goal-driven volunteer training systems.
