Complex Identities, Complex Outcomes: Exploring Gender, Identity Aspects, and Well-Being Among Multisexual People

This study examined identity dimensions and mental well-being among multisexual individuals in Greece, addressing gaps in prior research. A sample of 109 adults completed a questionnaire assessing multisexual identity processes, gender identity, and mental well-being. Results showed that multisexual women reported greater understanding of their multisexual identity, higher engagement with LGBTQIA2+ communities, and stronger self-awareness and sense of social justice compared to men. However, greater identity understanding among women was associated with lower social and psychological well-being, suggesting intensified experiences of dual stigma. Additionally, individuals with more fluid gender identities reported better well-being when actively engaged in LGBTQIA2+ or heterosexual communities, whereas those identifying as women faced challenges related to how their female and multisexual identities intersect and are shaped by sociocognitive processes. Also, the identity processes measured appear to support positive aspects of multisexual identity. Findings highlight the importance of a multidimensional understanding of multisexual identity through the lens of gender identity and suggest that psychotherapeutic interventions should address identity-related processes. In particular, they should support multisexual women in processing identity-related stigma and systemic pressures while also addressing social isolation and limited community engagement among multisexual men as key factors related to their well-being.
