Abstract

This article presents research on ekuwün (the relationship of respect for nature) as an element in Mapuche pedagogy and education. Its purpose is to ensure the formation of new generations of children and young people with a strong bond of respect and reciprocity with both the material and immaterial beings that coexist in nature. The methodology is qualitative. Semi-structured interviews were carried out among wise Mapuche elders and traditional educators. We employed content analysis. Our main results highlight Mapuche educational content that could be incorporated into natural sciences instruction to provide an education that fosters environmental justice. The theoretical contribution is to integrate this Indigenous content into the curriculum to strengthen practices of environmental care to mitigate the ongoing environmental crisis.
