Backer Engagement & Crowdfunding Performance

Crowdfunding has become an increasingly important mechanism for early-stage ventures to secure financial and community support. This study examines the relationship between creator-backer engagement and campaign performance using hand-collected data from 280 Kickstarter campaigns tracked from launch to completion. The data shows that both engagement volume (how many responses creators provide) and engagement frequency (how regularly they respond over time) are positively associated with campaign performance; however, engagement frequency is the stronger predictor of pledged funding and the number of backers. This finding suggests that the pattern of engagement matters more than its sheer quantity. Because engagement activities are costly and time-intensive, the results provide practical guidance on how creators can structure their communication strategies to maximise campaign performance.
