EVALUATING THE ORAL HYGIENE STATUS OF EPILEPTIC PATIENTS: A COMPREHENSIVE CLINICAL ASSESSMENT
Epileptic patients represent a medically compromised population with a significantly elevated burden of oral disease, driven by the complex interaction of seizure-related trauma, antiepileptic drug side effects, and compromised oral self-care capabilities. This review critically evaluates the oral hygiene status of epileptic patients across multiple clinical domains, including plaque accumulation, gingival inflammation, drug-induced gingival overgrowth, and traumatic dental injuries. A refined, individualized oral hygiene assessment and preventive care framework is proposed, integrating modified oral hygiene tools, tailored preventive regimens, structured professional recall intervals, and interdisciplinary collaboration between dental and neurological care providers. The goal is to improve oral health outcomes and quality of life in this vulnerable population through early detection and targeted intervention.
