Effect of sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors on left atrium remodeling in nonvalvular paroxysmal atrial fibrillation patients
ABSTRACT Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) was ranked among the most commonly encountered arrhythmia worldwide. Aims: It is aimed to evaluate the effect of adding sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) on left atrial remodeling and cardiovascular outcome in nonvalvular paroxysmal AF. Patients and Methods: A total of 60 cases with nonvalvular paroxysmal AF were randomized into two equal groups. Echocardiogram was performed at baseline and 6-month follow-up. Results: After 6 months of treatment, left atrial diameter (LAD) and left atrial volume index (LAVI) were significantly decreased in Group A than Group B. In contrast, left atrium average strain was significantly improved in Group A than Group B. Moreover, LAD% and LAVI change either absolute or relative was significantly decreased in Group A than B. Furthermore, there was a significant improvement in the LA strain absolute and relative% change in Group A than Group B. Conclusion: The addition of SGLT2is to the present classical therapy in AF patients can improve left atrial remodeling.
