Review Article-Ayurvedic Review of Rajonivritti

Rajonivritti, the Ayurvedic counterpart of menopause, is a natural physiological event marking the transition from the reproductive phase to Jaravastha. Unlike the contemporary concept, which primarily attributes menopause to estrogen deficiency due to the depletion of ovarian follicles, Ayurveda explains Rajonivritti through the principles of Kala, Svabhava, Tridosha, Dhatukshaya, Agni Vaishamya, and Srotodushti. The present review critically analyses the Ayurvedic concept of Rajonivritti with emphasis on its physiological basis, etiopathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and holistic management. A comprehensive review of classical Ayurvedic texts and contemporary scientific literature was undertaken. Rajonivritti is described as a Swabhavika Vyadhi characterized by Vata predominance, progressive Dhatukshaya, Artava Kshaya, and disturbances in Agni and Srotas, leading to diverse Doshaja, Dhatukshayaja, and Manasika manifestations. Ayurveda advocates a holistic approach through Rasayana Chikitsa, Pathya Ahara, Vihara, Panchakarma, and psychological support to promote healthy aging, alleviate Rajonivrittijanya Lakshanas, and improve quality of life. Thus, the classical Ayurvedic principles provide a rational and comprehensive framework for understanding and managing menopausal syndrome through individualized and preventive healthcare.
