Foundations of an E₈ group field theory

This overview states the organising principle of a series of papers on an adjoint-scalar group field theory on the compact form of E₈, and summarises what each of them establishes. The principle is rigidity. The input is fixed once, the exceptional Lie algebra e₈ together with a single field valued in its adjoint, with no background spacetime and nothing else added, and at every step the construction asks what the algebra permits rather than what a model would prefer. E₈ answers restrictively twice over. It carries no minuscule grading element, so no four-derivative kinetic term can be made ghost-free and the two-derivative action is forced; and its Casimir degrees leave a gap between two and eight, so the first invariant able to distinguish one adjoint direction from another is the octic p₈ = Tr(ad⁸), whose extremal and Morse structure ranks the candidate vacua. On the branch selected by an explicit structural choice of one Wilson-coefficient sign, the vacuum is the 114-dimensional contact orbit 𝒪 = E₈/(E₇×U(1)), the twistor space of the exceptional Wolf space EIX = E₈/(E₇×SU(2)), which then fixes the dimension and positivity of an emergent four-dimensional Lorentzian theory and the form of the effective action on it. We summarise four papers in one paragraph each, keeping their epistemic bookkeeping intact: a plain statement is a theorem, the one place where the algebra stops deciding is flagged as an explicit choice, and the one physical identification that is assumed rather than derived is flagged as a hypothesis. No new results are proved here.
