Building resilience through dialogic resonance

Abstract Dialogic resonance, the phenomenon in which speakers’ utterances evoke affinities with prior talk, plays a central role in building resilience within discourse. This study examines how resilience is co-constructed in pandemic-related conversations in two Chinese chat-style podcasts. The analysis shows that interlocutors actively mobilize dialogic resonance through multiple interactional resources: strategic shifts between mimetic and analytic stances, the use of a generic “you” to foster intersubjective alignment, and reformulations of prior talk that sustain affective and cognitive continuity. These practices enable participants not only to navigate disruption and uncertainty but also to collectively articulate resilience as a socially shared, interactionally achieved stance. The findings highlight the unique affordances of podcasts as dialogic spaces where resilience emerges through collaborative meaning-making.
