Voice Notes at Midnight
Voice Notes at Midnight is a narrative poem emerging from field experiences in communities affected by the November–December 2025 eruption of Mount Semeru in East Java, Indonesia. Rather than presenting disaster through institutional accounts, the poem is informed by observations, conversations, and everyday encounters documented during fieldwork conducted between April and May 2026. It follows the ordinary routines of a rural woman whose domestic labor, informal economic activities, and digital communication practices become intertwined with the uncertainties of living alongside an active volcano. By foregrounding familiar acts of listening, forwarding messages, and caring for others, the poem reflects on how local knowledge and trust are produced through daily social relationships. As a creative reflection on fieldwork, it illustrates how poetic writing can complement anthropological practice by conveying lived experience, emotional texture, and forms of community knowledge that often remain beyond conventional academic description.
