An Integrated Framework for Plyometric Training: Synthesizing Physiological Adaptation, Mechanical Specificity, and Objective Monitoring for Long-Term Athletic Development

ABSTRACT Plyometric training (PT) is a cornerstone of athletic preparation, fundamentally enhancing explosive power and neuromechanical efficiency through the optimization of the stretch–shortening cycle (SSC). This narrative review synthesizes the updated evidence on the physiological, mechanical, and applied aspects of PT to establish an evidence-based, integrated framework for long-term athletic development. We detail the mechanisms of adaptation, including the critical roles of tendon stiffness, elastic energy storage, and neuromuscular factors (e.g., preactivation and H-reflex modulation) in maximizing the rate of force development. The review systematically links these mechanisms to applied outcomes, demonstrating PT's efficacy in improving vertical jump height, sprint acceleration, change-of-direction speed, and injury prevention. Crucially, we propose a three-pillar framework for programming: (a) Physiological Adaptation, (b) Mechanical Specificity (guided by SSC duration and Force-Velocity [F-V] profiling), and (c) Individualized Monitoring. We emphasize the practical utility of objective tools, particularly the Reactive Strength Index measured through jump mats, for assessing neuromuscular readiness and guiding progression within the long-term athletic development model. This integrated approach ensures PT is implemented as a precise, science-driven intervention, optimizing training transfer and minimizing injury risk across an athlete's career.
