The Hidden Health Cost of Technology

Technology has dramatically improved human life, extending life expectancy, enhancing medical care, and increasing global connectivity. Yet every technological advance also carries hidden health costs that often remain unnoticed until they accumulate over time. This article critically examines the negative health impacts of modern technologies from a multidisciplinary perspective. Rather than focusing solely on direct physical effects, it explores how technology influences human health through behavioral changes, psychological well-being, social relationships, workplace dynamics, economic structures, and healthcare systems. The discussion covers topics such as sedentary lifestyles, sleep disruption, musculoskeletal disorders, hearing loss, digital attention fragmentation, social comparison, loneliness, workplace stress, automation, artificial intelligence in healthcare, measurement technologies, electromagnetic fields, and the future implications of continuous digital monitoring. Instead of treating technology as inherently beneficial or harmful, the article argues that its impact depends on how technologies are designed, regulated, and integrated into society. It emphasizes that responsible innovation should prioritize human health, autonomy, safety, and social well-being alongside technical performance and economic efficiency. This work was developed through an extensive critical dialogue with artificial intelligence. The AI served not as an authority, but as an intellectual collaborator that continuously challenged assumptions, generated counterarguments, evaluated scientific evidence, and refined the reasoning throughout the writing process. The article aims to contribute to ongoing discussions at the intersection of technology, public health, ethics, economics, and the future of human society.
