THE ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADER: FROM CONTROL TO CREATION

Abstract The author is Managing Partner of Desert Forge Ventures, and the former president of both Claremont Graduate University and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He reflects on his long career “as a professor, business school dean, and university president, and now as an investor working with founders and investors across many sectors.” Given worldwide changes during this time period, he writes that “opportunities often come from unexpected places. In this environment, leadership is less about control and more about creation, creating the conditions in which people, ideas, and organizations can thrive.” He cites the importance of what he calls the “entrepreneurial leader.” He describes the following shifts, which in his words are: From Directing Work to Shaping Possibility; From Having Answers to Asking Better Questions; From Minimizing Risk to Managing Intelligent Risk; From Individual Achievement to Collective Contribution; From Short‐term Performance to Long‐term Value Creation.
