Geographies of Biosecurity: An Introduction to the Special Collection
ABSTRACT Aotearoa is a global leader in biosecurity practices that exclude and remove unwanted organisms from its shores. But efforts to secure life are not simply technical problems; they are political and situated, leading to visceral experiences and sometimes unintended consequences. The articles in this Special Collection critically examine a wide range of contemporary biosecurity issues in Aotearoa, from place‐based case studies of biosecurity practices to broad conceptualisations of biosecure spaces. Each article moves biosecurity scholarship in novel directions by deepening our understanding of the colonial legacies, values, identities and more‐than‐human agencies that shape (and are shaped by) biosecurity practices.
