The Orthopaedic Surgeon Chairperson: An Overview of Key Concepts for Successful Recruitment and Effective Leadership
Being an effective leader in today’s evolving health-care landscape requires a full understanding of 3 key themes. First, rising leaders must understand recruitment and retention in the modern era. Second, developing and utilizing essential skills and resources is critical for success in a leadership position. Third, understanding organizational structure and how to work within a health-care system allows for the promotion of collaboration, innovation, and operational excellence. The goals of this review were to summarize these 3 concepts and to foster the success of orthopaedic surgeons seeking chairperson roles. This article is based on the symposium “Coalition Building: Effective Leadership in the Era of Modern Orthopaedics” held at the American Orthopaedic Association 2025 Annual Leadership Meeting.
