Cultivation of Chlorococcum sp. microalgae for biomass and lipid production using palm oil mill final discharge as medium
Abstract Exploring the potential of microalgae cultivation using wastewater from palm oil mill effluent to provide an alternative to treat the pollutant, and at the same time, produce lipid for potential bio‐resource. The palm oil mill final discharge (POMFD) wastewater was used as a nutrient source to cultivate Chlorococcum sp. The microalgae grown in 6.25% (v/v) POMFD produced a maximum dry biomass weight of 0.26 ± 0.01 g L −1 , which was statistically significant ( p < 0.05) compared to the higher concentration POMFD setups. It also bioremediates the wastewater by reducing 62.83% chemical oxygen demand (COD), and 56.88% total suspended solids (TSS). In addition, the high lipid yield of 30.36 1.77 wt% produced in 50.0% (v/v) POMFD has potential use for biodiesel.
