Human Essence in the Age of AI: Public Working Paper
Abstract As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable, public discussion often begins with what machines can do and what work may remain for people. Human Essence in the Age of AI begins with a different question: what is the distinctive contribution of human beings in relationship with increasingly capable technologies? The framework identifies eight Human Capacities—Awareness, Context, Cognition, Judgment, Action, Storytelling, Innovation, and Spirituality—and examines how they are formed, integrated, and expressed through relationships, institutions, and wider System Conditions. It distinguishes these capacities from AI Capabilities such as pattern recognition, language generation, synthesis, simulation, speed, scale, and computational reach. The paper presents two related architectures. The first describes the internal structure and foundations of Human Essence. The second traces how Human Capacities enter into relationship with AI Capabilities, institutions, and society through Formation, Human–AI Collaboration, the Generative Layer, Alignment, Coevolution, democratic Society, and Flourishing. The framework is offered as a dated, authored, and versioned working paper. It is sufficiently developed to support critique, application, and field engagement, while remaining open to refinement, evidence, and further development.
