Frugal innovation (FI) refers to economical innovation. This perspective seeks to link the empowerment of rural communities in India with FIs. A thematic review of literature is undertaken for the purpose of this article. Development based on FI has emerged as a significant approach in recent years to tackle the distinctive challenges encountered by the rural populace, particularly concerning poverty and socio-economic disparities. Achieving success in empowering rural communities through FI necessitates addressing various pre-existing challenges and limitations. These communities can overcome developmental obstacles and improve their general quality of life by utilising the concepts of innovation and creativity. One of the many important benefits of FI is its ability to provide affordable solutions that are especially suited to the requirements of rural areas. These solutions are often characterised by their simplicity, accessibility and ease of implementation, rendering them highly suitable for populations with constrained resources and infrastructure. In conclusion, FI has a revolutionary impact on rural areas’ socio-economic development. It creates new opportunities for development and prosperity by yielding cost-effective and ecological results. However, it is important to acknowledge that empowering rural communities through FI also has its own challenges. To achieve success, these limitations must first be addressed.
