Parametric Investigation and Optimization of Parabolic Space Frame Roof Systems with Variable Depth and Support Configuration Using Staad.Pro Under Static and Dynamic Loading

In present-day construction, space frame roof systems are widely used for covering large spans without intermediate columns. The structural behavior of these systems mainly depends on their geometry, especially the depth of the frame and the support arrangement. In this study, a parabolic curvature type space frame roof is considered to understand its performance under different geometric and support conditions. The space frame model is developed using STAAD Pro, where the top layer of the structure follows a parabolic profile over a fixed span. The analysis is carried out by considering different depth variations of the space frame. Initially, models with constant depth are studied using different depth-to-span ratios. Further, variable depth models are developed in which the depth is kept minimum at supports and increased towards mid-span. In addition to this, a parabolic variation in depth is also considered to check its effect on structural behavior. Along with depth variation, different support conditions are also analyzed. The study includes models with only end supports, end supports with intermediate supports, and multiple support arrangements to evaluate their influence on deflection and force distribution. All the models are analyzed under dead load, live load, and wind load as per relevant Indian Standards. The results are based on maximum deflection, member forces, utilization ratio, and overall steel quantity. From the analysis, the effect of depth and support variation on the performance of the space frame roof is clearly understood. Based on comparative study, suitable recommendations are made regarding the optimum depth and support arrangement for parabolic space frame roof systems. The outcome of this work will help in achieving a safe and economical design for large-span roof structures.
