Long term follow-up from the Barrett’s esophagus screening trial 3 (BEST3) demonstrates high negative predictive value of capsule-sponge-Trefoil-factor-3 (TFF3) test for esophageal adenocarcinoma
Diagnosis of symptomatic esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) leads to poor survival and morbid treatments1. Identifying individuals with the precursor condition Barrett’s esophagus (BE), when the lining of the esophagus is replaced by columnar epithelium, enables early detection of BE with dysplasia and stage 1 EAC either at initial BE diagnosis or through surveillance. This is when endoscopic therapy is most effective and potentially curative2,3. The non-endoscopic capsule-sponge–trefoil-factor-3 (TFF3) test has been proposed and tested as a minimally invasive screening tool for BE in high-risk populations and as a triage to endoscopy4–8.
