Resilience in Systemic Therapists in Germany: Personal, Professional, and Psychological Factors Associated With Resilience

ABSTRACT Resilience has been positively associated with greater therapeutic effectiveness and improved client outcomes. As resilience is now understood as a dynamic and developable construct, identifying factors that are linked to it is essential. This study ( SysPsyOnko ) examined levels of resilience among systemic therapists and factors associated with higher resilience. A total of 172 systemic therapists in Germany completed an online cross‐sectional survey assessing personal, professional and psychological variables. Resilience was measured using the Connor‐Davidson Resilience Scale (CD‐RISC‐10). The mean CD‐RISC‐10 score was 30.06 (SD = 4.58). All psychological variables were significantly correlated with resilience. The final model of a hierarchical regression analysis showed that the psychological variables contribute unique variance to resilience after controlling for personal and professional factors ( R 2 = 0.281, adj. R 2 = 0.230), F (11, 155) = 5.52, p < 0.001. Given that the average resilience scores of the sample were in the upper fourth quarter of the possible range, future research should shift from general resilience enhancement towards identifying and supporting therapists with lower resilience. Targeted health‐promoting interventions may be necessary to protect therapists' well‐being and sustain therapeutic effectiveness. Trial Registration: The study was registered with the DRKS (German register for clinical studies, ID: DRKS00036614)
