CARRYING THE TORCH: LEADERSHIP'S UNFINISHED EVOLUTION

Abstract The author served for 29 years as a career U.S. Army officer, and is now a Lecturer in Global Leadership at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. She writes of Leader to Leader founder Frances Hesselbein and her background as an advisor to the Army, including a “leadership staff ride” at Gettysburg in 1996, the year of the publication's first issue. “Three decades ago,” according to the author, “leadership was still largely defined by hierarchy, expertise, and organizational boundaries. Frances anticipated a different future. She looked out the window and saw a world in which inclusion, belonging, and cross‐sector collaboration would become leadership imperatives.” She identifies three leadership shifts Frances saw early on and which continue to play out organizationally. In her words, they are (1) From hierarchy to networks, (2) From representation to belonging, (3) From Sector Silos to Shared Challenges.
