Asymmetric Methodological Restraint: Reassessing Consciousness-First Ontology
Abstract: Methodological restraint — suspend judgment, avoid ontological commitment, wait for more evidence — presents itself as neutral caution under underdetermination. As actually practiced, it is not neutral. Speculative commitments grounded in physics, mathematics, or abstract structure are routinely tolerated, while commitments grounded in consciousness or phenomenology face disproportionate resistance. This essay diagnoses that pattern as asymmetric methodological restraint (AMR) and argues that AMR encodes a background physicalism that disadvantages consciousness-first approaches before inquiry begins. The argument turns on a decoupling that AMR conceals: empirical fruitfulness belongs to objective methodology, not to metaphysical materialism, and consciousness-first frameworks inherit the methodology while dissolving problems the materialist ontology leaves brute. Given shared principles — that coherence matters, that brute facts are costly, that all evidence is mediated through consciousness — the rational response to decades of explanatory failure is not indefinite restraint but ontological revision. The essay then applies the diagnostic to its own tradition, arguing that the pattern is not specific to physicalism and examining where consciousness-first work, including this project, is subject to it on the same terms. Consciousness-first frameworks deserve serious consideration not because they are certain, but because they engage problems restraint-oriented approaches have refused to investigate.
